The global airline alliances<\/a> will it be dented? Visit Qatar Airways to leave Oneworld<\/a> - the official date is only a matter of time now - comes the official announcement by China Southern that it will be leaving the Skyteam alliance in 2019. The Chinese airline based in Guangzhou (Canton) indicated a few weeks ago that it was leaving the Skyteam alliance. not wanting to renew<\/strong> its membership of the Air France-KLM and Delta alliance. Once again, a period of change is opening up which could have a negative impact on business travellers, who are used to a certain stability in alliances, particularly through the synergies they offer.<\/p>\n

On the face of it, China Southern's departure from SkyTeam is unlikely to have any major impact. the balance of this alliance<\/strong>. SkyTeam continues to count among its members the very powerful Chinese airline China Eastern, based in Shanghai, which has just extended its joint venture partnership with Air France-KLM to include two additional routes - Paris-Wuhan and Paris-Kunming - in addition to the existing code-shares on routes from Paris and Amsterdam to Shanghai. SkyTeam's members also include Xiamen Airlines, a more regional airline which, ironically, is a subsidiary of China Southern. For executives on the move, coverage of China<\/strong> by the alliance therefore remains broadly unchanged. Except that Skyteam will no longer have a gateway from southern China, and travellers used to using Guangzhou as a SkyTeam hub will have to find an alternative, such as Beijing, Shanghai or Kunming.<\/p>\n

China Southern's departure from SkyTeam could have a snowball effect. open the door to upheaval<\/strong> from oneworld. Although nothing has yet been confirmed, the rumour is persistent: China Southern could turn to the alliance dominated by IAG and American Airlines, the American airline having been a shareholder in China Southern since March 2017. This would favour this rapprochement, which is all the more interesting for Oneworld as it is the only alliance not to have full access to China. Of course, Oneworld has always said that it covers its needs in this market through the presence of Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon. But having a hub in Hong Kong is NOT a hub in mainland China. As a result, oneworld is currently unable to offer domestic flights in China, unless it sends its customers via Hong Kong with Cathay. Not a very attractive option for business passengers working in the Chinese market.<\/p>\n

The very likely arrival of China Southern could, however, become a major factor in the airline's future. a risk factor<\/strong> for Cathay Pacific, the Chinese airline whose main hub is Guangzhou, just 120 km from Hong Kong. Could this ultimately weaken Hong Kong? The Cathay hub is extremely attractive to passengers because of the comprehensive network it offers, with Cathay connecting around ten destinations in Europe to Japan, Korea, Australia and the United States. On the other hand, the hub risks losing most of the transfer traffic to mainland China and some of the traffic to South East Asia.<\/p>\n

So could Cathay Pacific in turn slamming the door on oneworld\u00a0<\/strong>? That's where Qatar Airways could come in... The airline is in fact a shareholder in Cathay to the tune of 10%. Its membership of oneworld has also enabled it to acquire stakes in IAG (20%) and Latam (10%). With its subsidiary Air Italy (formerly Meridiana), Qatar Airways now has the ambition of having its own alliance, forged with its capital links. A formula which, if it materialises, could possibly attract Cathay Pacific, the airline then occupying a position of strength - almost monopolistic - over the entire Asian market within a grouping under the leadership of Qatar Airways. 2019 should therefore be a crucial year for alliances. And for Oneworld more than any other.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
