A personalised welcome, ultra-fast check-in and security formalities, the comfort of a private suite before being driven in a saloon car to the foot of the plane: for a long time reserved for business aviation regulars, these services are now starting to be offered to passengers on commercial routes. Manchester airport, for example, has announced that it will be opening the following services in 2019 a VIP terminal<\/a> which will offer travellers a \"private jet experience<\/strong> according to Manchester Airport Group. The operator of the English hub is also planning to extend this concept to other airports, with London Stansted, which it also owns, among the possibilities.<\/p>\n

While this VIP treatment is discreetly offered in a number of European hubs such as Amsterdam, Geneva, Munich, Stockholm, Vienna and, more recently, Budapest, the British Isles are more accustomed to it. For over twenty years now, Dublin airport has had a small, discreet terminal<\/strong> located just before T1. Renamed Platinum Services in 2015 following major renovations, the place is used to seeing VIPs pass through, but also welcomes any passenger, even economy class passengers, as long as they pay 225 euros.<\/p>\n

The extra cost is certainly not insignificant for travellers used to frequenting the business lounges of major airlines free of charge. In return, they are guaranteed to forget all the stress of travelling and to be able to take advantage of rooms for meetings in complete discretion. \"Our customers, whether they travel in business class or on a private jet, appreciate confidentiality<\/strong> and the professional service we are proud to offer, from the attention to detail to the speed of transit through Dublin airport.<\/em>\"explains Dave Cromwell, Head of Sales and Reservations at Platinum Services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At London Gatwick and Luton, a business aviation specialist, Signature, looks after VIP travellers. \"We are delighted to bringing luxury back to commercial air transport<\/strong> and hope to extend this service in the future<\/em>\"said Evie Freeman, Managing Director EMEA of Signature Flight Support<\/strong>at the inauguration of the Signature Elite Class at Luton in 2017. At these two hubs, the Signature Elite Class lounges are open to passengers on private jets as well as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and even... easyJet! The access fee - almost 500 euros - has not yet been waived. nothing low cost<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Is exclusivity the way forward for the world's major hubs? Given the price, the ultimate in airport hospitality will no doubt remain an alternative to the airlines' VIP lounges. But this alternative looks increasingly attractive. \"I saw enormous growth<\/strong> in the last four years, since we reorganised the suites and became a 24-hour operation<\/em>says Dave Cromwell. We used to be known as Dublin Airport's best-kept secret, but that secret is no longer so secret and is open to anyone who wants it.<\/em>\"<\/p>\n

In response to growing demand, Frankfurt airport has opened a first VIP lounge<\/strong> in 2014 in the transit area of terminal 1A, followed by a second in 2017 at terminal 1B. \"It is true that our services are aimed at a relatively small group of wealthy customers. But the size of this group is growing, and so are the expectations that its members have of an airport.<\/em>\"This is what Fraport's Director of Operations, Anke Giesen, described at the inauguration.<\/p>\n

Spanning 1,300 m\u00b2, the venue features a club lounge with bar, a meeting area, eight private lounges as well as a \"cigar room<\/strong> in partnership with Davidoff. Prices range from 330 euros to 1,600 euros, depending on the services requested. At the same time, Lufthansa has been offering its first-class passengers an entire terminal, the First Class Terminal, with top-class services free of charge since 2004. So who are these travellers prepared to pay this extra for ultra top-of-the-range services?<\/p>\n

\"Nearly half our customers come from Europe, with Germany accounting for the lion's share.<\/em>explains Nicole Ebner, Co-Director of VIP Services and Protocol at Fraport, in an interview published on the lounge's website. The distribution depends on the events taking place around the world. The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, for example, attracts a host of top business leaders<\/strong>. Naturally, high-ranking diplomats make up a large proportion of our guests. If there's a major film festival, we welcome well-known actors.<\/em>\"<\/p>\n

Hollywood obliges, and Los Angeles is undoubtedly the place to be. the most exclusive VIP terminal<\/strong> at an international airport. Opened in May 2017, The Private Suite allows celebrities to wait quietly for their plane away from the paparazzi. In fact, that's its raison d'\u00eatre, since its owner is none other than Gavin de Becker & Associates, a company that handles the logistics and protection of the happy few. On departure and arrival, film stars and executives are entitled to a host of privileges: guarded parking, fast-track formalities, a private lounge equipped with a bed and bathroom, all with a view of the slopes and, of course, a vast choice of snacks and drinks.<\/p>\n

For an annual subscription fee of 4,500 dollars, members of The Private Suite can also use a meeting room or enjoy a free massage. In addition to this subscription, they must also pay 3,000 $ per flight for a VIP treatment including three guests. Ordinary travellers can take advantage of the terminal's services, but will have to pay a higher fee. - 4000 $ -<\/strong>including only two guests and without the benefits reserved for members.<\/p>\n

May 2018, United Airlines<\/strong> has teamed up with The Private Suite to offer access to this service to its high-contribution passengers flying on its routes to New York\/Newark, London Heathrow, Melbourne, Sydney, Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo Narita. The airline has negotiated preferential fares for this service, which is included in certain business class fares. \"United has created an exceptional service opportunity for its customers, and we are thrilled to be part of something that has never existed before in commercial air travel.<\/em>l\", said Joshua Gausman, co-founder of The Private Suite, when announcing the partnership. The eight-strong team will be made up of seasoned professionals, including a former Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton luxury hotelier and two managers who already had experience of this luxury service at Heathrow.<\/p>\n

With its Heathrow VIP offer, London airport is also playing the excellence card. In terminal 5, there is a space with around ten lounges hidden behind the most discreet of entrances. Initially, The Windsor Suite only welcomed the world's elite, as the owner of the space was the British government until 2011. While the Foreign Office still treats distinguished guests with respect, business and first class passengers also have access to the suite. The price to be paid for this ultra-premium service - \u00a33,300, or almost \u20ac3,750, for a traveller and two guests - is accompanied by the the best of British hospitality<\/strong>\u00a0These include a butler to fine-tune the final details of the trip, menus supervised by Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton, discretionary champagne and a personal shopper to accompany passengers as they shop in the terminal.<\/p>\n

What about Paris? Like all major capital city airports, the Roissy and Orly hubs are obviously organised to receive VIP guests. Owned by the State, at least until now, they each have a reception pavilion - the \"Pavillon de r\u00e9ception\". Lounge 200 at CDG and Lounge 500 at Orly<\/strong> - for executives and official delegations visiting France. Although there is no VIP service as formalised as at other hubs, Paris Airport has set up a concierge service offering travellers a tailor-made service from their home or office to the door of the aircraft. In addition, a number of private concierge service providers, such as the top-of-the-range valet service Chab\u00e9 and Net Services, have developed packages that include access to the famous lounges 200 and 500.We have a contract with ADP to process high contribution passengers on departure or arrival, handling immigration formalities while they freshen up in a private lounge.<\/em>explains Net Ramjee, founder of Net Services.
