TheEthiopian Airlines<\/strong> crashed a few minutes after take-off on Sunday, killing 157 people. A Boeing 737<\/strong> type MAX 8<\/strong>the latest model in the famous 737 family. An accident that recalls another, that of the airline Lion Air<\/strong>which last autumn also saw a brand new B737 MAX 8 crash twelve minutes after take-off. The China<\/strong> announced on Monday that it was suspending Boeing 737 MAX 8 operations on its territory. There was talk not only of precautionary measures<\/strong> but also economic reprisals<\/strong> against a backdrop of trade tensions between China and the United States. Since then, however, the bans have multiplied, with many countries deciding to ban the aircraft altogether until expert reports clarify the situation.<\/p>\n

Germany, France and Great Britain were the first EU countries to impose bans on Boeing aircraft. Since Tuesday evening, authorities throughout the European Union have been requiring member countries' civil aviation authorities to ban Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from their airspace. \"\u00a0Following the tragic accident involving a Boeing 737 MAX 8 on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of passengers.<\/em>said the press release. As a precautionary measure, EASA published [Tuesday] an Airworthiness Directive, effective 19:00 UTC, suspending all flight operations of all Boeing 737-8 MAX and 737-9 MAX aircraft in Europe. In addition, EASA has published a Safety Directive, effective 19:00 UTC, suspending all commercial flights by third country operators into, within or out of the EU of the above-mentioned models.<\/em>\" it says.<\/p>\n

The Civil Aviation Authorities of Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Singapore and Vietnam have suspended operations of all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to and from their respective countries. Indonesia has decided to ground all 737 MAX 8 aircraft for inspection. In Malaysia, overflight by aircraft is prohibited.<\/p>\n

L'US Federal Aviation Administration<\/strong>\u00a0resisted for a long time, initially confirming the certificate of airworthiness granted to the Boeing 737 MAX 8, and indicating that the safety of the aircraft was not in question... On Wednesday, President Trump and the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration<\/strong>) finally gave in, in the wake of the Canadian authorities. \"\u00a0FAA ordersTemporary grounding of Boeing 737 MAX<\/strong> operated by US airlines or on US territory<\/em>said the press release. The agency made this decision following the data collection process and new evidence gathered at the site and analysed today. This evidence, along with newly refined satellite data available to the FAA this morning, has led to this decision.<\/em>. The grounding will remain in place until further investigation is conducted, including examination of information from the aircraft's flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders\".<\/em><\/p>\n

Boeing has decided to recommend to the FAA the temporary suspension of operations for the entire fleet of 371 737 MAX aircraft.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Boeing was quick to react to this decision, even stating that it had advocated the ban: \"\u00a0Boeing remains fully confident in the safety of the 737 MAX. However, after consulting with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), aviation authorities and customers around the world, Boeing has decided - out of an abundance of caution and to reassure passengers of the aircraft's safety - to recommend to the FAA the temporary suspension of operations for the entire fleet of 371 737 MAX aircraft.\"<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In Europe, the company suffering the most severe consequences is low-cost Norwegian<\/strong><\/a> which has a fleet of 18 aircraft. If the situation drags on, this grounding could deal the final blow to a Scandinavian carrier in serious financial difficulty. TUI also operates five aircraft.<\/p>\n

According to Boeing figures, the airlines that have already received the largest number of B737 MAX 8s are American Airlines, Air Canada, Air China, China Southern, FlyDubai, Lion Air, Norwegian Southwest Airlines and Ryanair. In Europe, all the airlines have suspended flights of their B737 MAX 8s, as have Turkish Airlines and Icelandair, which have finally announced that they are grounding all MAX 8 models.
\nAfter Norwegian, the airlines most affected in Europe by the suspension of Boeing aircraft are Turkish Airlines (12 aircraft) and Icelandair (9 aircraft) on traffic to the North Atlantic.<\/p>\n

By the end of January, Boeing had delivered 350 Boeing 737 Max 8 models out of a total of 5,011 orders. Some twenty Max 9s are also in service, notably with Icelandair. The largest order in Europe was placed by Ryanair, with 135 aircraft.<\/p>\n
