From 20 August, at the airport of San Francisco International<\/a>In the United States, shops, catering areas and airline lounges will have to stop selling water in plastic bottles, the first step in a vast initiative by the American airport to reduce single-use plastics as much as possible. The initiative is part of a commitment by the airport authorities to become the world's first zero-waste airport<\/strong> by 2021. The Zero Waste plan, as defined by the Zero Waste Alliance, consists of reducing waste sent to landfill and incinerators by at least 90 % using \"soft\" methods such as recycling and composting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How will the end of the sale of bottled water at this airport, which handles 56 million passengers a year, come about? The sale of water will no longer be permitted in recyclable or reusable containers<\/strong>These include aluminium cans and bottles, recyclable glass and materials that can be composted in accordance with international standards. All water is covered, with the exception of scented water. The airport has installed nearly 100 water fountains in all its terminals to encourage passengers to fill their own bottles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other stage concerns food. All food and drink must be prepared and served in water. reusable or compostable crockery<\/strong>This includes cutlery. Catering accessories, such as lids and straws, will only be made available on request. If possible, they should be made without chemical or plastic containers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
