2019 clearly marks a turning point for Brussels<\/a>\u00a0Thirty years have passed since the creation of the Brussels-Capital Region. These three decades have seen some major developments, starting with the development of the European institutions; continuing with the demographic boom of the 2000s, with the many reforms that have helped to attract talent; followed by a major boost to innovation and, more recently, by environmental measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. making the city an even more pleasant place to live<\/strong>. \"The construction of passive buildings has been one of the region's latest priorities<\/em>This is why we are delighted to be working with hub.brussels,\" explains Arnaud Texier, strategic advisor to the general management of hub.brussels, the Brussels-based business support agency.<\/p>\n

This is because, since 2015, planning permission has become stricter and energy criteria higher, not least because an \"ecobuild\" cluster has been set up to help construction companies adapt to the new environmental regulations. \"There are already 3.5 million m\u00b2 of passive buildings in Brussels, including 400,000 m\u00b2 with high energy and environmental performance.<\/em>\"says Arnaud Texier. The reason why 'high performance' buildings are rarer is that the Belgian capital has very few greenfield sites: most of the projects are demolitions, reconstructions or renovations. \"However, 15 % of BREEAM-certified buildings in Belgium are located in Brussels.<\/em>\"continues the strategy advisor, underlining that construction is an asset for a city that intends to transit from one country to another. towards a circular economy<\/strong>by creating more local jobs. With 20,300 workers in the sector, one of the aims of the initiative is to offer jobs first and foremost to the people of Brussels, even the least qualified.<\/p>\n

However, thanks to the presence of European and international institutions, Brussels' population is mainly made up of talented people. \"The level of qualifications of Brussels residents is much higher than that of people living in other regions of Belgium<\/em>\"It's a good place to work,\" explains Pierre-Fran\u00e7ois Michiels, employment and economy expert at the Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis. While the population of Brussels is fairly young, with an average age of around 40, it is also highly skilled. For example, 46.6 % of the population in the 24-64 age bracket have a university degree, while the European average is only 31 %.
