A brief announcement on Monday evening, barely noticed: Slovenia's national airline Adria Airways<\/strong> announced that it was temporarily suspending flights on Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 September. On Wednesday, the carrier explained that it would have to extend this suspension to this Thursday and Friday. A message on the Adria website explained that \"\u00a0The company is currently looking intensively for solutions in collaboration with potential investors. The aim of all those involved is to ensure that Adria Airways resumes its flights according to schedule and that the cessation of certain activities is indeed temporary.<\/em>. \"<\/p>\n

Adria has in fact been facing a deterioration in its accounts for several years. Sold by the Slovenian government to a private German investor in 2016, the carrier has been racking up losses ever since. Its small size - 18 aircraft and one million passengers - and a small domestic market (1.9 million inhabitants in Slovenia, less than 4 million if southern Austria, northern Italy and western Croatia are included) are weaknesses today for a carrier that has lived for too long on the idea of owning a \"one-stop shop\". virtual monopoly<\/strong> on air transport in Slovenia.<\/a>\u00a0Slovenia's low potential, for example, explains the weakness of low-cost transport, generating barely 20% of total traffic at Ljubljana airport. These include easyJet to London and Berlin, Transavia to Amsterdam<\/a> and Wizz Air to Brussels-Charleroi. Today, the competition is more likely to come from LOT Polish Airlines, Turkish Airlines and even Air France-KLM, which recently strengthened its position on Ljubljana with six weekly flights.<\/p>\n

According to the airport of the Slovenian capital, Adria's main base, more than 56% of passenger traffic is in the hands of the national airline. Of the 1.81 million passengers, 1.02 million travelled on Adria Airways (+4%). A dependency<\/strong> Adria's market share fell by two points between 2017 and 2018. Of the thirty or so cities connected to Ljubljana, around twenty were connected by Adria.<\/p>\n

But the fluctuation of its network has also been a destabilising factor for passengers over the last two years. In the space of a year, the company has cancelled several routes, including D\u00fcsseldorf, Geneva<\/a>Hamburg, Kiev and Warsaw.<\/p>\n

The Slovenian Civil Aviation Authority has not yet terminated Adria's Air Operator's Certificate, giving it one week to - until 2 October<\/strong> - to present a financial restructuring plan. \"\u00a0If this is not the case, the operating licence will be revoked with no possibility of extension.<\/em>\" said Rok Marolt, the head of civil aviation, at a press conference in Ljubljana on Wednesday. Withdrawal of the operating licence would mean the end of all commercial flights by the airline.<\/p>\n

Flight cancellations outside Slovenia<\/h3>\n

The carrier has had to return a large part of its fleet - eight aircraft - following the termination of leasing contracts by their owners. On Wednesday, five aircraft had to be grounded. Six other aircraft out of the ten remaining - a fleet of CRJ-900s and Saab 2000s - could also be taken back by the leasing companies. The suspension of flights is therefore understandable.<\/p>\n

This cessation of all the airline's routes - apart from a daily evening flight to Frankfurt - has consequences not only for Adria but also for a number of airlines which used to charter aircraft to the Slovenian carrier. These include Austrian Airlines on the Lyon-Vienna, Bologna-Vienna and Warsaw-Vienna routes, Luxair on the Luxembourg-Berlin route and Swiss on the domestic Zurich-Lugano route. It is estimated that some 3800 passengers affected by the suspension of all flights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to Rok Marolt, the company needs to several tens of millions of euros<\/strong> capital for its survival. German investment fund 4K Invest is due to present a restructuring plan on Monday. The Slovenian government has refused to bail out the airline, and it seems that it has been unable to find strategic investors.<\/p>\n

The disappearance of the airline would ultimately leave the way clear for low-cost carriers, and Slovenia would become the second Central European country, after Hungary with the disappearance of Malev in 2012, to no longer have its own airline. This raises the question of whether each European country still needs a national carrier, apart from for reasons of prestige<\/strong>... In Budapest, for example, passenger traffic rose from 8.5 million in 2012 to 14.86 million last year. And all without a national airline...<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
