For a long timeLuxembourg Findel airport<\/strong> remained dormant, content with its traffic of businessmen from the financial world and European institutions, while at weekends charters took mainly German holidaymakers to the sun. From 1997 to 2010, passenger traffic fluctuated between 1.2 and 1.6 million. But things have changed since then: more than 2 million travellers visited the airport in 2013, more than 3 million in 2016 and more than 4 million last year. The airport should end 2019 with a total of 4.3 to 5 million passengers. 4.5 million passengers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It has to be said that Luxembourg airport is at the heart of this great euro-region<\/strong> of almost 5 million inhabitants called Sar-Lor-Lux<\/strong>The Saarland is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which includes Saarland in Germany, Lorraine and Luxembourg. Being both the capital of the Grand Duchy and one of the three European capitals<\/strong>Luxembourg has the best chance of establishing itself as the region's air gateway. And this, despite the close to seven other airports<\/strong> within a radius of less than 200 km.<\/p>\n

Luxembourg does, however, have one major advantage: it has an airline based at the airport, in this case the Luxembourg national carrier Luxair<\/strong>. It accounted for almost 52% of all passenger traffic in 2018, a figure that is nevertheless down sharply on the start of the decade. Back then, Luxair generated 76% of all traffic at the Findel hub.<\/p>\n

Luxembourg has another advantage on the horizon. The end of public subsidies<\/strong> to airports in 2024<\/strong> by the European Union should actually favour Luxembourg and probably result in serious financial difficulties for its closest competitors, Metz-Nancy-Lorraine and Saarbr\u00fccken airports.
\nAccording to a study by the French Ministry of the Environment on State aid to airports, published in 2016, airports with fewer than 700,000 passengers do not have enough traffic to be financially profitable enough to do without subsidies. Traffic does not exceed 300,000 passengers at Metz-Nancy<\/strong><\/a>while at Saarbr\u00fccken<\/strong>The number of passengers has stagnated at around 400,000.<\/p>\n

The Luxembourg platform is seizing this opportunity to transform itself into a veritable transport hub<\/strong> as well as a business centre<\/strong>. Work will therefore begin in 2020<\/strong> with the construction of the Airport City project. The project involves the development of 15,000 m\u00b2 of office space<\/strong> but also shops, restaurants, a 120-room hotel, car parks and a tram station by 2022. The investment represents between 25 and 35 million euros<\/strong>. Eventually, up to 40,000 square metres and 2,000 parking spaces will be created. The airport's runway will also be renovated in 2021.<\/p>\n

The tramway<\/a> will provide a direct link between the exhibition centre<\/strong> of Luxembourg, the Kirchberg plateau where the european institutions<\/strong> and the Central Station<\/strong>. It will take around twenty minutes to get to the heart of the city. The airport's tram station will serve as a transport hub for the whole region, welcoming buses from the rest of the country as well as from France and Germany.
\nLuxembourg is the best-served airport for the Sar-Lor-Lux region, with around sixty destinations. For example, the hub offers more flights to France than Metz-Nancy airport. The national carrier Luxair flies several times a day to Paris CDG as well as to Nice. Luxair has announced that it will be launching two new routes to France in March, the first to Nantes<\/strong> <\/a>and the second to Montpellier. The airline will offer two weekly flights to each of these cities. In addition to Luxair, easyJet connects Luxembourg to Bordeaux<\/strong><\/a>Ryanair to Toulouse<\/strong> and Volotea to Marseille and Nice<\/strong>. And during the high season, Luxembourg is also linked to the Corsica<\/strong> <\/a>as well as Biarritz<\/strong>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
