As far back as 1911, the British Crown built a new city, called New Delhi, which became the political centre of British India. Around the same time, the British created Canberra in Australia. Then there was Islamabad in Pakistan, which replaced Karachi as the capital from 1960. And more recently, Putrajaya as the administrative capital of Malaysia since 1999 and Nay Pyi Taw, the capital of Myanmar since 2005. Now it's Jakarta's turn to lose its title as the world's capital. "capital of Indonesia. This makes 70 years old that there is talk of a move. But it is only the current President of Indonesia Joko Widodo who officially took the plunge during his first term of office, announcing last April that he was studying a suitable site. The argument? Rebalancing Indonesia's developmenttoo focused on the island of Java alone. Recently re-elected to lead the country for five years, Joko Widodo now has his hands free to refine his plans and finally launch the titanic construction of the future capital.

READ ALSO : "Jakarta/Kemang district: southern hipness

It has to be said that this is a matter of urgency. Jakarta is the city in the world that is experiencing the most rapid sinking of its subsoil under water. The north of the capital, where the historic city is located near the port, has sunk by 2.5 metres in the space of a decade. The northern part is losing 25 cm on average, and the rest of Jakarta is losing 10 to 15 cm a year. If nothing is done, by 2050, 95% of North Jakarta will have disappeared.

There are also problems of intense pollution due to overpopulation (officially more than ten million inhabitants, but in reality 30 million if the suburbs are included) and constant traffic jams. It is estimated that some 10,000 more private cars join the capital's roads every year. What's more, Jakarta is regularly exposed to the earthquakes that shake the island of Java. It therefore seems that the current capital is doomed in the long term.

Borneo, home to the future capital

At the beginning of September, we finally learned where the Indonesia's future political centre will be located. The Indonesian President has selected the province of East Kalimantanon the east coast of the island of Borneo. Kalimantan is relatively central, 1,200 km from Jakarta, 1,500 km from Bali or Sumatra and less than 500 km from the fourth most populous island in the archipelago, Sulawesi.

The choice of the east coast of Borneo was also motivated by the fact that it lies in an area of safe from earthquakes or flooding and is one of the richest provinces in Indonesia. According to official statistics, GDP per capita (expressed in purchasing power parity or PPP) reached more than 40,000 dollars per inhabitant in 2018, compared with 14,000 dollars for the country as a whole.

Two major cities, Balikpapan and Samarindaare present in East Kalimantan. Balikpapan, which should be 50 km south of the future capital, is the de facto economic centre of Indonesian Borneo. It is home to the oil industry, gas production platforms, a major port and the country's largest refining centre. Numerous international companies are present in this agglomeration of 850,000 inhabitants, including the American ChevronTexaco and the French Schlumberger and Total.

L'Balikpapan airport currently handles eight million passengers with regular flights to Brunei and Singapore. East Kalimantan is also the first province in Indonesian Borneo to benefit from a toll motorway, which opens at the end of this year. It will link Balikpapan to Samarinda, the regional capital, in 1? hours, and passes through the site of the future capital.

An investment of 33 billion dollars

It is estimated that the future Indonesian capital - no name is yet in circulation - should represent an investment of 33 billion dollarswith the start of work estimated at 2021. The first offices could already be operational in 2024. It is estimated that nearly 1.5 million people could eventually leave Jakarta for the new capital.

The authorities promise that the latter will be as effective as Seoul and as green as Singapore with many gardens. It will also be a "smart-cityA city where technology will be used to manage everyday life, with an integrated public transport system and traffic regulation.

A paradisiacal vision of the future that could unfortunately also come up against the realities of the country. Corruption and compromise remain endemic despite attempts to curb century-old habits. This should influence development choices. Environmental NGOs also fear that the new capital will further accelerate the process of deforestation. deforestation of the Borneo jungle, one of the planet's most important green lungs.

However, the trend seems inexorable and the economic opportunities will certainly attract foreign investors to this part of Borneo. As for Jakarta, it will retain its title as the country's economic, financial and cultural capital... which isn't so bad after all!

Instead of coming
