Then list those that make up the Accor group. Finally, list the latest concepts launched by Hyatt, Hilton and IHG. Clearly, this is not an easy task, given that a ground swell The hotel industry is currently in turmoil, with a frenetic pace of brand launches and mergers & acquisitions. No doubt the sector's professionals are also getting a little lost, since the acquisition of Starwood by Marriott in 2016 paved the way for these gigantic groups around which a myriad of brands. By swallowing up its American competitor, Marriott has welcomed 11 brands into its fold, including several stars, notably Sheraton on the business side, W, a pioneer in design hotels, and the ultra-luxury St Regis. Added to these are its own blockbusters, notably its eponymous Marriott brand, to form a solid group of 30 of the most renowned brands in the hotel world.

All of which should give the competition some ideas. The latest example of consolidation in the sector is the takeover of NH Hotels by Thai group Minor International. Thanks to the takeover of the Spanish hotel operator and its 380 establishments, the owner of the Anantara luxury brand is now a strong player in Europe and Latin America.

When Sébastien Bazin took over the reins of Accor in 2013, the French group still only had a dozen or so brands, with Ibis, Mercure, Novotel, Pullman and Sofitel as the benchmarks for mobile executives. Today, there are more than 35. Or a threefold increase in the range of brands in just six years. To expand its portfolio, Accor has followed two parallel paths: on the one hand, new concepts and, on the other, a large number of acquisitions and partnerships, in particular to strengthen its position in a key segment at the moment, lifestyle hotels. For example, the French group has acquired stakes in Mama Shelter and 25Hours in Europe and has half the market share in the United States. SBE Entertainmentowner of the sophisticated SLS, Mondrian and Delano brands.

Above all, Accor achieved flagship acquisition in 2016, that of FRHI, which has propelled Europe's leading hotel group into a whole new dimension. Indeed, this acquisition opened the doors to the luxury segment by encompassing the Raffles and Fairmont brands, while strengthening its presence in the ever-strategic American market. On a different note, but in the same way, extending both its geographical coverage and its footprint in the business segment was one of the reasons for the takeover of Mövenpicka brand with a strong presence in the Middle East and South-East Asia. "We already had Pullman, but it's a young brand with just 140 hotels. Or even a mix of the two, such as the SureStay Studio brand, announced last October for budget and extended-stay establishments.

To give more weight to its brand portfolioThe Radisson Group also made major changes in 2018. "Before, in Europe, we relied on our key brand, Radisson Blu, and on the Park Inn midscale brand.says Valérie Schuermans, Vice President Business Development of the Radisson Group. Today, our structure is organised around seven brands covering the entire spectrum, from Prizeotel in the budget segment to Radisson Red in the lifestyle segment and Radisson Collection in the luxury segment."

Backed by the recognised name of Radisson, the largest upmarket brand in Europe by number of hotels, has enabled the group to assert its ambitions in the luxury segment, with the Radisson Collection present in London, Copenhagen, Moscow and Rome, and soon in Paris, in the La Défense district. Until then, the Group had been dabbling in the very top end of the market, not having never really made an impactNot even with its Missoni-branded hotels, a trend that was all the rage in the mid-2000s but has since lost ground. "The crisis has come and gonesays Valérie Schuermans. At the same time, translating the experience of a fashion brand into the hotel industry, which is a very operational sector and requires a pragmatic approach, and getting two groups with different DNAs to work together was very difficult."

By multiplying their brands over and over again, hotel groups have a single will To have hotels to suit all budgets and all occasions. "Our ambition is to extend our portfolio from economy to ultra-luxury, and in each of these segments, to have an offer that is both classic and lifestyle."says Chris Cahill, CEO of Accor's hotel operations. In the same vein, Jenni Benzaquen, vice-president of Marriott's European luxury brands, believes that "the challenge is to offer a diversity of experiences. A regular at a Ritz-Carlton may well stay in an Edition for a few days on business. If they want to spend a romantic weekend, they can opt for a Luxury Collection or a W if they want a trendier atmosphere."

If hoteliers don't have the experience travellers want in-store, they're going to give it away. look elsewhereIHG's strategy is to build on this success, ticking off all the missing boxes as it goes along. IHG has identified a gap in the luxury segment to complement its InterContinental brand: the British group is buying up the boutique hotels Kimptonthe ultra classics Regent and resorts Six Senses. For its part, Hyatt, which has noticed similar weaknesses, is once again bidding for the Thompson and Joie de Vivre urban boutique hotels in the United States and the Alila resorts in Asia.

One by one, hotel groups are building up their offer to appeal to all audiences. Following this strategy, Hyatt has tackled a quivering segmentThis small group has only two resorts on the Atlantic. This small group may only have two resorts across the Atlantic. These include meeting opportunities in places that are attractive to local customers, cutting-edge design and works of art hanging everywhere on the walls, and, increasingly, coworking spaces. The Vitality room reinforces this positioning with a high-performance air purification system, lighting that adapts to circadian cycles and exercise equipment.

Collection fashion show

This was the big trend until recently: almost every group had its own 'collection'. Launched in 2017, Best Western Signature and Tapestry by Hilton followed the appearance in 2016 of Tru by Hilton and Hyatt's Unbound Collection, which were themselves followed by others, such as Tribute Portfolio, the Best Western Premier Collection, Curio by Hilton and, before that, Accor's MGallery and Marriott's Autograph Collection. All these light" brands have aimed to de-standardise their group's offer by welcoming into their fold independent establishments with character, more in tune with the new expectations of travellers. In return, these hoteliers can benefit from the marketing strength of these major global groups, and in particular their loyalty programmes. This strategy is continuing, with some major successes such as Autograph Collection, which reached 175 hotels in the second quarter, MGallery, which offers more than 100 hotels, and Curio and Tru at Hilton, each of which has more than 70 establishments.

Loyalty in good order

To orchestrate their ever-growing brand portfolios, several hotel groups are relying on new-style loyalty programmes to steer travellers in the right direction, no doubt a little lost among all the offers on the market. Whether it's All at Accor or Marriott Bonvoy, these loyalty tools add an emotional dimension by offering rewards that are no longer based solely on freebies, but on customers' passions. For example, points can be exchanged for concert tickets, tickets to sporting events or VIP sightseeing tours. These are just some of the favours offered to frequent travellers, based on experience and lifestyle.

The pace is almost dizzying.
