Will the conference and seminar business pick up as expected after the summer?<\/h3>\n

Philippe Augier -<\/strong> For the time being, all events have either been cancelled or postponed. Will events be able to resume in September? A lot will depend on the health conditions in which the events can be organised. At present, we have no visibility. However, we're not afraid of the health aspect. The sector, which has already experienced the Vigipirate plans after the attacks, has shown that it knows how to manage flows. We have already made some proposals<\/a> which are in the hands of the ministers and those responsible for health protection. At the moment, we are working hard, each in his or her own association, but also all the associations together and all the associations together with the government. Not long ago, we had an audio conference with Bruno Le Maire, during which we explained to him all the things we felt were necessary, both in terms of aid and the conditions for the takeover.<\/p>\n

Can business pick up again quickly?<\/h3>\n

P. A. -<\/strong> I think the recovery will be very gradual. Activity at major congresses will slow down considerably. International events will be on hold for a while. Seminar business should pick up more easily. While it often takes two years to organise a conference, a seminar can be decided from one week to the next. But there are uncertainties here too. Are companies going to organise seminars when they need to cut a number of budgets? And if they do continue, they will probably do so to a lesser extent, over two days instead of three, with fewer participants.<\/p>\n

What impact has the crisis had on convention destinations in France?<\/h3>\n

P. A. -<\/strong> For some towns that rely heavily on business and leisure tourism, its impact is enormous<\/a>. A 3,000-strong conference is less important for Paris or Lyon than for Deauville or Cannes. From the point of view of economic activity, this is dramatic. In Deauville, the casino and convention centre have closed. The Barri\u00e8re group's three hotels and 14 restaurants are closed. Not to mention all the other hotels, and I don't know how many dozens of restaurants that have also shut down. Apart from the shops that are still open, nothing is working. As you walk around the city, it's like something out of a science fiction film. The humans have disappeared. It's killing the economy, and it's killing local finances too.<\/p>\n

What difficulties do you see ahead?<\/h3>\n

P. A. -<\/strong> We're helping businesses, which is great and necessary. Any business that we can help to get back on its feet will be fine. But for towns that rely heavily on tourism, there is also a financial risk. In addition to traditional taxes such as taxe d'habitation, my town also receives tourist taxes from hotels, parking fees, taxes for occupying the public domain, i.e. terraces, as well as income from the casino. When you put all that together, you're looking at millions in missing operating revenue. I reminded Bruno Le Maire that just as the State or companies can have an unbalanced budget, local authorities cannot. So someone will have to explain to me how this is done. For the moment, no one has talked about financial support for local authorities.<\/p>\n

Despite all this, a town like Deauville retains all its appeal.<\/h3>\n

P. A. -<\/strong> All events from spring to August have been cancelled or postponed. But for the time being, from September to the end of 2020, the Palais des Congr\u00e8s will hardly have a day free. The same applies to the first quarter of 2021.\u00a0Our reputation remains an asset<\/a>. Just like our geographical location, two hours from Paris, which has always been an advantage and will be even more so in this case. The local clientele will play a fundamental role, as travel is limited and there are no longer any international visitors. I would add one more point that was already in our favour, but which I think could be even more so in the future, and that is the unity of the locations. In Deauville<\/a>Everything is within easy reach: the convention centre, the city centre, the casino, the hotels and the beach. Once you're there, there are no transport problems. That's a big plus for organisers.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
