This is the first major exhibition in twenty years devoted to the work of Mark Rothko (1903-1970), one of the most emblematic artists of the post-war period in the United States. In the 1950s and 1960s, Mark Rothko pioneered a new way of painting with Colorfield Painting, in which he created 'coloured fields' in flat tints with indecisive edges, in moving surfaces, sometimes monochrome or composed of coloured bands. The work abstracts itself from form to lead to meditation. In this way, it reaches a particularly sensitive spiritual dimension.<\/p>\n
The exhibition focuses on the latter part of the painter's life, between 1958 and 1970, and brings together some fifty paintings and works on paper, as well as paintings from Japanese collections. The highlight is the famous Rothko Room, a group of sixteen murals originally intended for the Four Seasons restaurant in New York's Seagram Building. But given the mediocre artistic quality of the space, Rothko never delivered the works, paid back his emoluments and later donated some of them to the Tate.
