These are the working clothes of the model student, or even of the good professor at the University of California at Los Angeles (Ucla). Too far from the symbolic uniform that they will almost certainly don later? Not really, given the relaxed Californian atmosphere. In any case, there's a buzz under the professor's cap, to the extent that five Nobel Prize winners (chemistry, physics, medicine) and four former students (peace, economics, chemistry) are among the teaching staff at the famous university.

FINANCING: THE ART OF FUNDRAISING

The prestigious institution has no fewer than 22 research departments spread across 163 buildings, where more than 5,000 scientific projects are underway. With more than 38,000 students and 27,000 employees earning a combined salary of $2 billion a year (not including the 4,2800 jobs in the region that depend directly on campus-related purchases), Ucla is one of the biggest economic powers in Los Angeles County. In 2007, its activities generated almost $10 billion for the whole of California. And yet, Ucla is a public institution. But here, "public university does not mean state-run university", explains Phil Hampton, in charge of media relations, "the proof is that this year the State of California only contributed around 13 % of the total budget". The American university is a machine that finances itself from a great many sources. Dr Clark Barrett, professor of anthropology, compares it to a business. "Students and their parents are customers who have to be satisfied. But to attract the best people (students and professors alike), you have to be extremely competitive and offer exceptional teaching and research conditions. And to do that, you need funding. Tuition and accommodation fees are generally the mainstay of a university's budget. But in a public institution, these fees represent less than 10,000 dollars per year per student; very little compared with private universities, where the cost can be as high as 36 or 37,000 dollars*. So finding the money requires a great deal of creativity, and not just in academic research. Although in 2006, some 19.5 million dollars were collected from various patents and the commercialisation of inventions (it was at Ucla that the Internet was first born, in 1969).

ONE UNIVERSITY, ONE BRAND

Another pillar of the budget is the Ronald Reagan Medical Center, which attracts wealthy patients who are prepared to pay a fortune to benefit from the cutting-edge care provided by this university hospital, considered to be one of the best in the country. But it is the famous fundraising that is the sine qua non for the survival of an institution of this scale. In 2006, the largest-ever fundraising campaign for research and higher education took place: thanks to the Ucla campaign, over 3 billion dollars in donations were collected. On a renowned campus, cultural and sporting events are also a significant resource. "People travel from far and wide to attend an American football or intercollegiate baseball match," explains one former student, "and anyone who comes to see a sporting event leaves with a T-shirt or cap." After all, the Ucla logo is now a registered trademark that is sold from Mexico to Singapore and Scandinavia. And this represents an ever-increasing annual sum: 400,000 dollars for 2006.

"Publicising the brand also helps to attract international students, who contribute to the cultural and intellectual diversity of the campus," emphasises Phil Hampton. Even more than for sport, it's for film, of course, that people come to Ucla. Considered one of the two best film schools in the country, the School of Theater, Film and Television organises all kinds of events in its own theatres. "It's not unusual for former students to come and show their work at Ucla, and sometimes even offer a premiere," explains Ben Harris, coordinator of the Producers Program. And it's not just the students who are interested... Which is logical, given that these 'alumni' include Francis Ford Coppola, Gore Verbinski (director of Pirates of the Caribbean), Fred Roos (producer of Apocalypse Now and The Godfather) and David Koepp (writer and director of Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible, The Panic Room, Spider-Man and Men in Black). Although the young graduates of the School of Film do not all become icons, they at least already have one foot in the 'industry', as all their teachers here work in Hollywood. As Justin Wolsky, a fresh-faced young director in jeans and a grunge beanie, explains, "Future directors, scriptwriters and producers are trained together. We start working with each other even before we leave school. And it works: my first short film will be produced this year by two alumni of my class who have become producers." Efficiency, relaxation, creativity and performance... the American way!

Article 7 of 5 in this dossier <a
