According to the agency, by the end of June 40% of the world's destinations had eased the restrictions put in place for international travellers with the introduction of COVID-19.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The 40% figure<\/strong>This figure, put forward by the World Tourism Organisation, comes from the latest report published by the agency on 19 July. It is, however, a real improvement on the previous report, dated <strong>15 June, when only 22% of countries had relaxed the conditions for entry into their territory<\/strong>. This percentage was already a significant improvement on 15 May. On that date, the UNWTO had calculated that only 3 % of countries offered simplified entry conditions. According to UNWTO analysts, this development confirms the trend towards a \"slow but steady adaptation and a responsible resumption of international tourism\".<\/p>\n<h2>Europe sets the example<\/h2>\n<p>The organisation's data shows that of the 87 destinations that have now relaxed travel restrictions, only four have completely lifted all forms of restrictions. For 83 others, the relaxation is partial, with borders still closed to certain types of traveller, for example. <strong>Some 115 destinations (53 % of all destinations worldwide) continue to keep their borders completely closed to tourism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>Destinations that are more dependent on tourism have been the most active in easing travel restrictions. Of the 87 destinations identified, 20 are small island states that depend on tourism as an economic driver.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Europe is also confirming its role as a world leader in the recovery of international tourism.<\/strong> It accounts for almost half of the destinations that have relaxed entry conditions for international travellers.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>However, it is not certain that this trend will continue over the coming weeks. <strong>At the end of July, this positive trend seemed to come to a partial halt, with a resurgence in cases of covid-19<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Hong Kong, for example, is reconfiguring its population. In Europe, the United Kingdom has reintroduced a quarantine for travellers from Spain and Luxembourg, while Belgium has partially reconfigured the population of Antwerp and placed the cantons of Geneva and Vaud in a red zone.<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is encouraging progress, according to the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
