" Lufthansa and its employees are not immune to the increase in the number of corona infections currently being observed throughout Germany. Over the past few days, our crews have been on short-term sick leave. These industry-wide challenges have led airlines to withdraw further flights from the system across Europe, including Lufthansa, in order to be able to cover traffic peaks" said a spokesperson.
Airport congestion too, Lufthansa cuts more than 2,000 additional flights on these hubs throughout the summer. They will be added to to the thousand or so flights already cancelled in July over the weekends.
A total of 3,200 flights disappear this summer
In an interview with the tabloid Bild Zeitung, Lufthansa explains the situation as follows. " In order to inform passengers as early as possible, Lufthansa will be withdrawing the system for the summer. 2,200 additional flights out of a total of around 80,000 flights at the Frankfurt and Munich hubs. This includes the other days of the week, which until now have been less affected." .
Above all, the company will cancel flights to European and domestic destinationswhere there are viable transport alternatives like the train. The airline should also modify its timetables accordingly. For the moment, no information has been released on the routes affected from French-speaking Europe.
The carrier has not been very reassuring about the normalisation of the situation. According to the company's management, the problems are expected to continue until early 2023.
