Lufthansa demands more rail lines for its Munich hub

Munich airport, Lufthansa's second intercontinental hub in Germany, needs to improve its rail connections. The current station only accommodates regional S-Bahn trains, which connect the airport to Munich in 40 minutes. Lufthansa now wants an express link.

Lufthansa taps his fist again on the table in the back of the serving Munich airport. The German platform, the country's second largest with 12.5 million passengers in 2021 (47.9 million in 2019), owns a mediocre rail network. A few bus lines and two S-Bahn (suburban railway) lines link the airport to Munich, but the journey times are extremely long. It takes at least 40 minutes to cover the 38 km between the city and the airport. What's more, there are no major lines to and from the hub.
