A precursor of modern art, he embodied the ideal of the romantic bohemian artist and the great adventurer, surrounded by myths and fables... Here we will see his emblematic canvases such as La Vision après le sermon (1888) painted in Pont-Aven, where, in front of Breton women against a red background, he introduces an imaginary motif (Jacob's struggle with the angel), breaking with the principle of strict reality then in force. We will also see his paintings inspired by the tropical flora, fauna and daily life of Tahiti.
Other highlights include the room devoted to self-portraits, watercolours and ceramics, as well as rarely-seen illustrated letters and sketchbooks. A hymn to sensuality.
