Lufthansa rethinks the comfort of its aircraft in Europe

More space and more services on board for all its passengers in Europe: that's what Lufthansa is offering from this year. The airline will install some 32,000 seats on its 180 aircraft flying on European routes, an operation which will be completed in early 2012 and will cost 170 million euros.

This new, more ergonomic seat, with a thinner backrest and 4 cm extra space per row, will replace the current seats. With a load 12 kg lighter than the previous version, it will help to reduce the weight of aircraft, thereby cutting fuel consumption per passenger.

But above all, it gives the carrier the opportunity to integrate two extra rows of seats, the equivalent of 2,000 extra seats offered for sale across the entire European network. The storage spaces under the seats have also been redesigned, as have the deeper baggage compartments.

In terms of in-flight service, Lufthansa is reintroducing a range of sweets such as musli bars and chocolate bars for Economy Class passengers, as well as a wider choice of beverages. A hot meal is now offered in all classes beyond a two-hour flight. Lufthansa will also be calling on renowned chefs to prepare these menus throughout the year. The next stage in this in-depth overhaul of the Lufthansa product is a new long-haul business class, scheduled for this spring.
