Business travellers who frequently visit Africa will soon be able to use their American Express card in more of the continent's countries. This leading player in corporate payment solutions has concluded an agreement with the Ecobank Group, the leading pan-African financial services group, to significantly extend acceptance of the American Express card.
Thanks to this, over the next 12 months, 12 new countries will be added to the list of destinations where cardholders will be able to use it to pay their expenses. These are Burundi, Guinea-Bissau, Gabon, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Central African Republic, São Tomé and Príncipe, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Togo.
At the same time, the number of merchants accepting American Express card payments will also increase in nine other countries: Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania. Travellers will also be able to withdraw money through Ecobank's network of ATMs, present in all these countries except Cape Verde. This agreement will benefit both travellers and retailers in all these countries, who will be able to reach a wider international customer base.
" This agreement with Ecobank is an important milestone for American Express card acceptance in Africa, as it will enable us to extend our presence in sub-Saharan Africa to 42 countries, compared with 30 at present" said Mohammed Badi, President of Global Network Services at American Express. For his part, Jeremy Awori, Chief Executive Officer of the Ecobank Group, said " delighted to welcome American Express to our network, confirming our commitment to providing innovative payment solutions to our customers across Africa" .
