Iberia revises its frequent flyer programme

Iberia is overhauling its frequent flyer programme to enable business travellers to benefit from their miles, renamed "Avios", for longer and more efficiently. The Spanish airline is thus moving towards greater consistency with British Airways, its partner within IAG.

Iberia is getting ready to give its frequent flyer programme a facelift: points, now called "Avios", should, according to the airline, offer easier access to top-level cards. From 16 November, the 4.7 million or so travellers who are members of the Iberia Plus programme will earn points according to the actual distances travelled, rather than by geographical area. The recalculation of Avios points should also benefit business travellers in the longer term: customer accounts will now only expire after 36 consecutive months of inactivity.
