The Trump administration has ordered Delta Air Lines to terminate its joint venture with the national carrier Aeromexico by 1 January 2026.
This antitrust immunity agreement, which has been in place for nearly nine yearsThe new agreement will enable the two airlines to coordinate schedules, fares and flight capacity between the United States and Mexico. And to maximise their revenues.
The US government, although seen as pro-business, does not seem to have been receptive to the company's arguments on the advantages of the joint venture. According to the Department of Transport (DOT) dated 15 September, this decision is based on " persistent anti-competitive effects on routes between the United States and Mexico City. This gives Delta and Aeromexico an unjustifiable advantage. ".
Transport Secretary Sean Duffy stated that this measure was in response to the Mexican government's decision to relocate cargo airlines from Mexico City's main airport by 2022.
In a press release, Delta said it was "disappointed" by the decision. The carrier explains that the end of the joint venture " will cause significant harm American jobs, communities and for travellers between the United States and Mexico ". The company will be examining the possibility of appealing this decision in order to change or even reverse it.
Little change for passengers
Delta is nevertheless seeking to reassure passengers travelling between the two countries. " All flights will continue to operate normally unless Delta advises otherwise. "says the company. The DOT has also indicated that the two carriers will be able to continue working together in other ways..
" Delta and Aeromexico will be able to continue their partnership through remote activities such as code-sharing, marketing and cooperation on loyalty programmes. "Delta added.
" Delta will also be able to retain its stake in Aeromexico. Both airlines will be able to maintain all their flights between the United States and Mexico. without restriction"the company added.
Delta has a 20 % stake in Aeromexico. The two carriers have a market share of 60% on flights between Mexico City and the United States. Mexico City is emerging as the fourth most important international hub to the United States.
