Delta: ideas and oil

Faced with rising fuel prices, Delta acquired a refinery to cover most of its fuel requirements in the United States.

It's a first in the airline world. Delta Air Lines has announced the acquisition of a refinery south of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The deal cost $180 million, plus another $100 million to restructure the plant to maximise paraffin production. In other words, the price of a jumbo jet. The benefits: the carrier is expected to cover nearly 80 % of its domestic fuel requirements and generate annual savings of $300 million on this item.
