After working closely with the Dadaists and Surrealists, he established himself as an inventor of sophisticated techniques such as collage, rubbing, scratching and decalcomania. A rebellious and often misunderstood artist, he remained torn between his desire for freedom and the political upheavals of his time. In 1922, he left Cologne for Paris, but after being detained twice because of his nationality, he decided to flee to America in 1941, where he married four times, notably to Peggy Guggenheim.
