HTL: hotels in offices

Attention business travellers in Scandinavia: the Swedish hotel group Scandic is launching HTL, a new hotel chain designed to meet demand from a "new target group, with different priorities to traditional customers".

The credo of the new HTL chain can be summed up in a frugal, no-nonsense slogan: "less is more". The best location at the best price, with efficient digital solutions and functional design: according to the first elements unveiled by Scandic, this is what HTL customers will be entitled to expect from their hotel. The adventure begins next May with the opening of the first HTL, shortly followed by a second in the centre of Stockholm. In the long term, the objective is as measured as the concept itself: twenty or so establishments should open within five years in the major cities of Northern Europe. Scandic already has a typical location in mind: converted office buildings. "Many landlords have unoccupied buildings that would be perfect for conversion into HTL hotels," says the group, which plans to invest €110 million in launching the chain. Which leaves plenty of hope for the conversion of all those vacant offices from Tromsø to Copenhagen...
