Emirates sets course for free Wi-Fi

Emirates intends to offer free Wi-Fi on board "as soon as possible". The airline is backing its strategy with an annual investment of over 20 million dollars.

Emirates is making in-flight connectivity one of its short-term priorities, as evidenced by the $20 million investment the airline is making each year. "We see Wi-Fi access as a high value-added feature for our customers that complements Emirates' service offering, rather than a source of revenue for our airline," says Tim Clark, Chairman of Emirates. "We are also convinced that free on-board Wi-Fi will become a free service and a standard that customers will expect on an airline renowned for its service such as ours in the same way as catering or entertainment programmes. Emirates is leading the way and we are working closely with our suppliers and other stakeholders towards this vision. In October alone, Emirates recorded triple-digit growth in the use of Wi-Fi on board, proof if any were needed that demand is there.
