Next to the Eduardo VII Park, the InterContinental demonstrates the efficiency of major business brands. Its suites, 16 in all, are much appreciated by visiting celebrities, while its 315 rooms, all very large, offer king-size beds and a bird's eye view of the city. "Imagination is more important than knowledge". This phrase by Einstein, which crowns the library, illustrates the atmosphere of the establishment. Designer Miguel Cancio Martins, known in Paris for his work on the Buddha Bar, let his inventiveness guide the transformation of this bourgeois residence on the very chic Avenida da Liberdade. The décor blends contemporary elements with local touches such as the lift, paved in black and white, and the counter of an old herbalist's shop used as a reception area. With 42 rooms and one suite, the hotel offers an intimate setting for small groups.

MYRIAD BY SANA
Backing onto the Vasco de Gama Tower, the Myriad by Sana is doing its bit to help reclaim the Tagus. The only five-star hotel near the Parc des Nations, this 23-storey, 186-room design liner seems to be floating on the river. And there's no need to ask for a room with a view: they all have one. One of Lisbon's finest restaurants, awarded a Michelin star. German chef Joachim Koerper, who fell in love with the Iberian peninsula after working in some of France's top establishments, produces top-class cuisine - the cream of celery with truffle is to die for - in harmony with an ultra-design setting. With its all-glass façade, it's as if the whole of Lisbon were part of the décor. The upstairs lounge is dedicated to events, with a terrace for an aperitif in the open air. For up to 120 people.

LARGO
Designed by Miguel Cancio Martins, the setting at Largo is an old cloister with a very contemporary twist, culminating in an aquarium where phosphorescent jellyfish undulate. The menu, devised by Louis Anjos, one of Portugal's most renowned chefs, is as inventive as ever, with dishes such as prawn risotto with pesto and the inevitable cod with mint dumplings. BICA DO SAPATO
One of the hotspots of Lisbon hipness, with no less than John Malkovitch as co-owner. Housed in a former industrial warehouse, this restaurant, along with its neighbour Lux, one of the city's legendary nightclubs, launched the revival of the Santa Apolonia station district, at the foot of the Alfama. In a room with a very 70s design, Bica do Sapato offers excellent Portuguese cuisine, including bacalhau of course, a melting pork shank and long beans in tempura. A way of demonstrating that this speciality is first and foremost from Lisbon, before being brought to Japan by Portuguese missionaries. In a fitting twist, the restaurant has also made sushi its speciality. For up to 60 people.
