New terminal

Poland's strong economic growth, combined with improvements to its tourist infrastructure, has logically led to an increase in air traffic.

Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport alone accounts for more than 50 % of national traffic. The statistics provided by the airport are a measure of the boom in the Polish aviation sector, with traffic more than doubling between 1999 and 2006, from 4 million to 8.1 million passengers.

The airport's summer 2007 catalogue also gives an indication of this development, with no fewer than thirteen new destinations, from B for Belfast to V for Verona.

Work has begun on a new terminal, which will eventually triple the airport's capacity. The arrivals hall of this terminal 2 was inaugurated in December 2006 and work is due to be completed on 30 November. Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport could also be relieved by the construction of a new airport dedicated to low-cost and charter flights, at Modlin, 40 kilometres north of Warsaw.
