
Already partners in the alliance Skyteamand have been sharing their codes for the last fifteen years, Air France KLM and Air Europa intend to go even further. The two groups have decided to join forces in a joint ventureThe project is now awaiting approval from the Brazilian and European competition authorities. Air France would thus strengthen its position in Latin America, where it is already associated with players such as Aeromexico and Gol.
" The joint venture agreement between the Air France - KLM group and Air Europa was signed by both parties on 10 April 2019 and is awaiting regulatory approval from the relevant competition authorities in Europe and South America". said Air France KLM management, adding: " These processes always take several monthsespecially as this JV involves several different regulatory authorities" .
The Group's management therefore expects the agreement to be implemented progressively, covering all flows between Europe and Central and South America. Business travellers can look forward to increased connectivity, with Air France KLM already referring to " the launch of new routes and direct flights between the two continents" .
29% market share
For the European group, the aim is to strengthen its positions, particularly vis-à-vis the IAG : " We are still looking to extend our services to South and Central America, and a joint venture will certainly accelerate this process, as we can join forces to penetrate new markets and launch more direct services for the benefit of customers." said Air France KLM management, adding: " It is also a response to the competitive landscape, where the JV IAG-LATAM is already in place and represents 31% of the market offer. The AFKL joint venture will take second place with 29 %." .
