Le decontamination of the Italie since mid-May is gradually allowing rail traffic with its neighbours to resume. From Francethe SNCF has reintroduced a daily service between Paris and Milan. Thello also resumed its first rail service on 4 June, solely between Nice and Milan. The company offers two daily frequencies between the two cities, and is planning to extend the service to Marseille in the coming weeks. Very strict health regulations are being applied, such as the one in two seats blocked on board trains.
Another viable alternative for passengers is transit via Switzerland, which is already the case on the Paris-Milan line via Dijon/Basle and the Gotthard tunnel. From 29 JuneThe agreement with Trenitalia's partner network provides for five EuroCity trains on the Gotthard route departing from Zurich or Basel. This represents around 50% of normal capacity. In a second phase, probably in mid-August, other trains will be added until the normal service on this route is restored from 7 September. The Switzerland-Milan route should then be extended as far as Venice.
On the SimplonFrom 29 June 2020, four direct trains will run in both directions: two from Geneva via Lausanne and two from Basel via Bern to Milan. The next stage will take place on 7 September on this route. From mid-August to 6 September 2020, however, rail operations will again be suspended due to works between the villages of Iselle and Domodossola in Piedmont.
In addition, the resumption of cross-border regional traffic TILO has been running between the canton of Ticino and northern Italy since mid-June. From 29 June 2020, international long-distance trains will once again be running from Switzerland to Italy and vice versa. SBB has also confirmed additional frequencies between France and Switzerland this July.
