Aer Lingus to become part of the IAG group

It now seems to be just a matter of formalities. After almost being taken over by its enemy Ryanair, Ireland's national airline Aer Lingus is finally set to merge with the IAG group, the holding company for British Airways and Iberia.

The Irish government has finally decided to sell its 25% stake in Aer Lingus to the British. The government said it had chosen the best solution for the Irish carrier, which is suffering fromintense competition on its domestic market and on transatlantic routes, one of its key markets. On the face of it, the transaction will secure the Irish carrier's future. Willie Walsh, CEO of IAG, has already indicated that he is considering expansion of Aer Lingus business, particularly on intercontinental routes. British Airways plans to strengthen Dublin's appeal as a hub between North America and Ireland, Great Britain and continental Europe. According to Willie Walsh, Aer Lingus could launch flights to four new destinations in North America by 2020 from Dublin. The CEO of IAG is even considering positioning Aer Lingus on a limited number of destinations in Asia. With in view, India, Japan and China among the first markets to be served.
