Higher taxes, fires and strike hit Marseille airport's summer results

The rise in taxes on air transport and the strikes in July have had an impact on business at Marseille airport, where growth in passenger traffic has moderated over the months.

According to the latest figures fromMarseille airport, summer traffic did not reach last year's record levels due to external events in July. The air traffic controllers' strike, the giant fires around the airport led to the cancellation of almost 400 flights. But the airport also points out that a significant increase in taxes on air transport in France weighed on traffic levels.

Nevertheless, Marseille welcomed 2.32 million passengers at the height of the summer. That's total traffic between January and August of 7.75 million passengers. This still represents an increase in traffic of 1.8%, corresponding to almost 135,000 additional passengers compared with the same period in 2024. At the same time, airport management notes a fall in aircraft movements (-0.9 %).

The same trend has been observed in recent years, French destinations (mainland France) are being neglected (2 million passengers, -8% between January and August) to the benefit of international services (5.6 million passengers, +5.4% since January). The majority of passengers travelled to European countries (3.8 million passengers, +4% since January). The biggest increase, however, was in so-called "affinity" destinations such as the Maghreb (1.5 million passengers, +6, 1% since January).

Marseille named one of the world's most beautiful airports

This summer, theAéroport Marseille Provence was honoured to be selected as one of the 6 "most beautiful airports in the world" by the Versailles Prize.. A prestigious award for its terminal 1designed by Foster+Partners, WSP and Rougerie+Tangram, and inaugurated in June 2024.

The new terminal has seen steady growth in results since it opened
last year, particularly with regard to waiting times for checks,
ease of getting around and the general atmosphere.

New services such as the biometric baggage drop-off (nearly 5% of baggage has already been delivered autonomously on Air Corsica flights), artificial intelligence to answer travellers' questions (over 2000 conversations already listed in 30 languages, including Mandarin) and the opening of a Food Court indoor
boarding. Not forgetting the new 600m² international lounge. All these factors confirm the quality of the airport's services.

AMP's aim is to become one of the best in Europe, while retaining the same high standards of quality.
The strengths that make it unique. This ambition will be realised through
d'a new brand to discover in October.

This winter, Marseille Provence will be linked to 88 destinations in 32 countries by 33 airlines.. Six new routes will be launched to Funchal (Portugal), Medina (Saudi Arabia), Cairo (Egypt), Tel Aviv (Israel), Dakhla (Morocco) and Praia (Cabo Verde).
