While the situation remains critical in New Caledonia despite the imposition of a state of emergency, a curfew and the deployment of the army in the overseas territory, the riots have resulted in the isolation of the archipelago, which has been cut off from its airlines since 14 May. According to the CCI Nouvelle-Calédonie Aéroports website, air traffic remains suspended until further notice. The airport did not give any further details.
However, theAircalin is more specific. The local carrier says it is cancelling all flights to and from Nouméa-La Tontouta due to the airport closure. until 23 May. The cancellations concern services to Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, Nandi, Papeete, Port-Vila, Singapore (with connections to Paris), Sydney, Tokyo and Wallis.
The company explains that it is waiting for the announcement from the New Caledonian High Commission that the airport will be reopened. This will enable it to resume its flights. It is therefore urging travellers not to go to the airport until the authorities give the go-ahead.
Aircalin has taken appropriate commercial measures. For flights cancelled between 14 May 2024 and the reopening of the airport, passengers can change date free of charge on Aircalin flights. Additional charges may apply on partner airlines. Flight cancellations are also possible free of charge. However, the carrier specifies that costs incurred by flight cancellations (transfer or accommodation) are not covered.
