The final annual figures are not yet available, and stop at the end of November, but the trend is encouraging to say the least: with 0.34 accidents for every million flights, the rate posted by international aviation has never been so good since IATA began compiling these data in 1945. Without going back that far, the association indicates that the accident rate is now 68% lower than it was ten years ago. While Africa remains the most dangerous region, with a much higher rate (3.93 serious accidents per million flights), the figures show a clear improvement (-23%) compared with the average over the last five years. Conversely, Russia was a poor performer in 2011, with an accident rate of 11.07 per million, compared with 7.15 in 2010.
