Airbus is currently working with German companies T-Mobile, on the telephony side, and Rimowa, specialists in top-of-the-range luggage, to create an intelligent suitcase. Equipped with an RFID chip, GPS and even a 2G mobile connection, the suitcase can be tracked as it travels. The dedicated "Find my Bag" application can be used to geolocate and, if necessary, find lost luggage. The project goes even further by displaying the weight of the baggage and, above all, by memorising the opening of the suitcase, of which the traveller is informed. The project, presented this summer by Airbus, could be marketed in the medium term by Rimowa to the general public, but also by airlines, which would consider renting these traceable suitcases to travellers. In all, more than 26 million pieces of luggage were lost in 2012 - including nine million in Europe - forcing airlines to pay out two billion euros in compensation to travellers.
