Firstly, the alliances have enabled passengers to travel from one point to another around the world on several airlines, all with a seamless service. This means online or agency booking on all airlines, end-to-end baggage check-in, issuance of all boarding passes, and recognition of passengers with privileged status throughout the itinerary.
It is on this last point that the alliances have been the most innovative, offering specific itineraries to all their high-contribution travellers. SkyTeam's SkyPriority service, for example, is available at more than 1,000 airports worldwide, and ranges from a dedicated check-in hall to VIP border crossing and security checks, and possibly personalised assistance through to boarding, whatever the airline.
