Formalities

French nationals holding a passport valid for at least six months must go to the Cameroon consulate in Paris from Monday to Thursday between 9.30am and 12.30pm with their complete application. Two identical recent passport photos (4 x 4) are required, as well as a stamp fee of 115 euros for temporary, transit and tourist visas and 230 euros for long-stay visas, to be paid in cash at the Consulate General. Depending on the security situation in Cameroon, this requirement may be considerably increased. Business travellers are advised to enquire at the consulate and to bring :

  • A copy of the electronic airline tickets or travel certificate
  • A visa application form to be printed in colour
  • Copy of birth certificate less than 3 months old
  • Proof of address less than 6 months old
  • A signed and stamped letter of assignment from the company, stating the reasons for the visit, the dates of the visit, the full contact details of the partner in Cameroon and mentioning the accommodation and any payment of travel expenses.
  • A signed and stamped letter of invitation from a Cameroonian correspondent, authenticated by the town hall or police station, stating your full name, passport number, dates and reason for stay.

Compulsory vaccinations

Vaccination against yellow fever is required on arrival. This must be done at an approved international vaccination centre at least 10 days before departure. Vaccinations against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, hepatitis A and B are recommended, as is the vaccine against meningitis.

Preventive treatment against malaria is essential, even in urban areas.

Currency and exchange rates

The currency is the CFA Franc (XAF). It takes 0.001524 Euro to convert 1 CFA Franc. For 1 Euro, you will get 655.96 CFA francs.

Time difference

There is no time difference between France and Cameroon, except during summer time in France, between March and October (-1h in Cameroon).

Language

French and English are the official languages of Cameroon. Eight of the country's ten regions, home to 83% of Cameroon's population, are French-speaking. The other two regions, representing 17% of Cameroon's population, are mainly English-speaking. The country has an extraordinary wealth of national languages: 55 Afro-Asian languages, 169 Niger-Congo languages, 4 Ubangi languages and 2 Nilo-Saharan languages are spoken in Cameroon...

How to get there

Douala has an international airport 8 kilometres from the city centre. Direct flights link the city to Paris and Brussels in less than seven hours. Several African capitals are also linked to Douala, including Addis Ababa: Ethiopian Airlines offers daily connecting flights to Europe.

Yellow taxis take passengers to Douala city centre in around fifteen minutes. The fare is around XAF 3,500. Before you arrive, you can also ask your hotel to organise a transfer by shuttle or private driver.
