Simplifying airport passenger processing using biometric technology. This is what theairport Berlin with its new facial recognition application BER Traveller. The airport authority is a member of the Lufthansa and the biometric service provider, FastID.
The three companies have just launched a test phase. During this period, the service will be available to members of the HON circle and Senator of the Lufthansa group. This also includes passengers flying on Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Swiss. On request, passengers can register for BER Traveller and use the application during the test period. Voluntary registration is carried out via an application from the FastID supplier.
Initially, the service will allow passengers to use priority access for security checks by facial recognition instead of a boarding pass. Identity is verified by taking photos using cameras installed at processing points. These are then compared with the photos taken with passenger biometric data from the FastID application (facial recognition).

After the theft, the data are deleted from FastID and remain exclusively on the passenger's mobile phone in the application. Passengers can therefore manage their profile and user data independently.
In the longer term, facial recognition will be extended to the airport's self-service check-in and boarding gates, as well as for access to Lufthansa lounges. The airport has posted detailed instructions on how to use BER Traveller.
