The network
One of Frankfurt's strengths lies in the huge network of destinations it offers, particularly to Central and Eastern Europe. It is possible to travel to 21 cities in Russia and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States). In Central and Eastern Europe, 17 cities are connected to Frankfurt. The airport also offers ideal connections to the Near and Middle East, as well as Turkey.
The terminals
The airport has three terminals: terminal 1, terminal 2 and the private first-class terminal reserved for Lufthansa. Terminals 1 and 2 are linked by automatic shuttles in the passenger area. Terminal 1, however, remains the most used, as it handles all Lufthansa flights as well as those of its Star Alliance partners.
In addition to a terminal for first-class passengers, Lufthansa offers a zone reserved for business passengers. The majority of European flights are concentrated in Pier A. Pier B is currently being rebuilt and will welcome long-haul flights next year, including those of the Airbus A380.
The services
Automatic check-in counters allow boarding passes to be issued, even for passengers with baggage. Lufthansa operates nine business lounges, including an arrivals lounge. A unique advantage: all Lufthansa boarding lounges offer beverages (tea, coffee and water) and newspapers. Eight business lounges are located in Terminal 2, including those operated by Air France and British Airways.
The shops: over 200 boutiques, including a gigantic supermarket.
Airport Conference Centre: opposite terminal 1 with 36 meeting rooms and adjacent to the Sheraton Hotel, Europe's largest airport hotel with a thousand rooms.
Hotels: Intercity (four stars), Sheraton (five stars), Steigenberger (five stars). Two Hilton hotels under construction.
Access
The airport is just 15 minutes by car from Frankfurt on the motorway and less than 30 minutes from Wiesbaden or Mainz. By train, it takes 12 minutes on the S-Bahn. The hub also has a mainline station, which handles ICE (high-speed train) services in particular.
