MIAMI BUSINESS IN THE SUN
Even in Miami, we can't believe it! Until recently, we didn't even think this kind of energy was possible. In New York, all right! But there, on the shores of the blue flots, under an azure sky, with white boats, sand and coconut palms in the background... No, we never thought it was possible. That's a bit like forgetting the successive stages in the history of one of the youngest metropolises in the southern United States, born barely 120 years ago. It's forgetting, for example, the ultra-glamour of the 1930s, its bold urban planning and design, its Coral Gables and Miami Beach districts; it's also forgetting that, after a period of neglect and an image as a New York hideaway, the city recovered in the 1980s to become the place to be for fashion, design and show business; And it's easy to forget that, a little later, the influx of young Americans in search of parties and eternal springtime gave it back, perhaps in spite of itself, that exceptional atmosphere of carefreeness and lightness.
And therein lies the paradox. Miami, with its sea, its sex and its tropical sun, also works hard, whether in the creative or finance sectors or, more recently, in the field of new technologies. As a result, star architects such as Herzog and De Meuron, Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano and Norman Foster are flocking here, while new districts are being created. No sooner has one been launched than another springs up. For the moment, it's Downtown, Brickell and the Financial District that are all the rage. But just before that, yesterday, it was the old industrial wastelands and dilapidated warehouse districts that were making a name for themselves with their international fairs, Art Basel Miami and Design Miami.
This has given the city a new and very special aura, and it is now one of the chic Top Ten arty metropolises. What's more, the city's population mixes cheerfully and smoothly, with half of its 2.5 million inhabitants having been born outside its borders, whether in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia or Europe. In this respect, the large number of French nationals present here are not to be outdone, succeeding in ways that are only possible in America. With a predilection for the creative, gastronomic and restaurant sectors. You can't do things differently.
