Flightright handles compensation for passengers affected by air travel disruptions in Europe. While discussions are due to take place in the European Parliament on a possible re-evaluation of compensation rights passengers, the company has revealed the list of airlines with the most delays.
Over the first five months of the year, the performance of the 20 airlines with the highest number of departures in Europe has been scrutinised by Flightright. Only one airline posted more than 30% of delays over this period: TAP Air Portugalwhich, according to the company, has a rate of 37.14%.
Five carriers also posted delay rates in excess of 20%. In descending order, they areAir France, Swiss International, Finnair, Ryanair and easyJet.
The best performances were recorded by Iberia, Austrian Airlines and Wizz Air.. These three airlines have a delay rate of less than 11%. Wizz Air - the champion of this ranking - is even close to 10%.
France, Luxembourg and Switzerland: poor performers
As for countries with the highest level of backlogs in the first five months of the year, Eurocontrol also puts Portugal in the lead. The country has a rate of 34.9%. It is followed by Switzerland (30.2%), Luxembourg (28.7%) and France (28.2%)..
Among the major countries, Greece has a departure delay rate of 26.4%, Spain 25.5%, Italy 24.2%, Belgium 24%, Germany 22.8% and the UK 20.7%.. According to Eurocontrol's definition, only flights that take off more than 15 minutes from their scheduled departure are considered delayed.
The best pupils are to be found in the north of Europe. Sweden has a delayed flight rate of just 13.6% between January and May 2025. It is followed by the Denmark and Estonia, both with a similar rate of 15.1%.
