It has now been two to three years since theStrasbourg airport regains colour, emerging from the shadow that the nearby platforms of Basel-Mulhouse and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden always cast over the city's air traffic. The airport of the Alsatian and European capital benefits, in part, from the formidable traffic growth generated by Volotea. The low-cost regional carrier offers up to 27 destinations in 7 countries with two Airbus A320s based in Strasbourg. This is equivalent to 925,000 seats over a year.
The most recent route to be launched is Strasbourg-Munich, won in January following a tender process. The route has been offered since 9 April with two flights per week, on Mondays and Thursdays. Another announcement from Volotea is the launch in September of a Strasbourg-Florence route. Here too, Volotea is adopting its usual strategy of two flights per week (Wednesdays and Sundays) between Alsace and Tuscany.
easyJet takes a cautious approach on Strasbourg-Nantes
More originally, easyJet has just announced the launch of a "test" route. For a month, the orange and white airline will offer a domestic flight on the Nantes-Strasbourg cross-route. The first flight took place today, Friday, April 17. The route is scheduled until May 18th with 2 flights per week, on Mondays and Fridays. This flight represents a remarkable time saving for all travellers, both business and leisure: A 1h30 flight compared to 6-7 hours by train or 8 hours by car. This allows for day trips. This relatively short period will enable easyJet to assess and analyse the real demand for this route, with a promotional fare set at €40...
Finally, another airline will be landing in Strasbourg in November, also for a period of almost a month. British low-cost airline Jet2.com will offer six weekly frequencies from Strasbourg to the United Kingdom, with two flights per week to Edinburgh, London-Stansted and Manchester. The aim is to attract Britons to the famous Christmas market in the Alsatian capital. The flights will indeed take place from November 26th to December 21st. However, these flights could also generate a clientele from Alsace – leisure and business – which could encourage Jet2.com to extend its operations.
These new developments strengthen the airport management's target of welcoming 1.8 million passengers by 2030, compared to 1.31 million last year.
