Uber will no longer be able to operate in London. The British capital's public transport authorities, Regulator Transport for London (TfL), have just announced that they will not be renewing its operating licence, which expires on 30 September. The main complaint against world leader in VTC Uber does not comply with safety standards.
Following in the footsteps of Denmark and Hungary, the famous VTC app is once again seeing its scope for manoeuvre restricted, while at the same time it is facing other legal battles in the United States and around the world. This is a serious blow to the taxi app, which will no longer be present in one of the world's biggest business destinations, where it used to have 40,000 drivers out of the 116,000 registered in the British capital.
The black cabs will certainly not take a dim view of TfL's announcement, as they have been railing against competition from the American giant. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has declared his support for the decision to reject Uber's application for a new licence. "All London businesses must respect the rules and comply with the high standards we expect, particularly when it comes to customer safety. " he said, according to Reuters.
"Transport for London and the Mayor have given in to a small number of people who want to restrict consumer choice " said Tom Elvidge, Managing Director of Uber in London. Uber is not giving up and will appeal the decision. This will allow it to operate until the end of the appeal process.
