La Deutsche Bahn and the Lufthansa already offer 134 daily trains to Frankfurt airport from 17 German towns. From July onwards, it will also be possible to fly into Frankfurt with the Lufthansa Express Rail from Hamburg and Munich. In December, there will also be links to Berlin, Bremen and Münster.
New extra-fast 'Sprinters
The other aspect of this enhanced cooperation is the establishment of Sprinter" connections. These trains, which will run at the same speed as conventional ICEs, will nevertheless make fewer stops. The train journey between Munich and Cologne will be reduced to less than four hours. Go to Nuremberg and MunichTrains from Frankfurt airport will now take just two and three hours respectively. This route will be served twice a day. The sprinter will provide access to more connections at the Frankfurt hub.
All Lufthansa Express Rail services will be maintained. This includes seat reservations, guaranteed correspondence, mileage accumulation and access to DB lounges for Business and First Class customers. Passengers in Business or First Class benefit from the DB Premium service in First Class, including an on-board catering service.
Other services will be added in the future. Express Rail trains will be identified by a common logo DB-LH affixed to the carriages. LH information can also be accessed on the train via wifi. The trains also offer ample luggage storage capacity. Finally, train passengers will be able to use a priority route to pass through security.
From April onwards, Lufthansa Express Rail tickets will be available on booking systems. But only if the associated connecting flight is also on the reservation systems. To celebrate this enhanced cooperation, Miles & More members will see their status miles doubled on all Lufthansa Express Rail routes, as on all flights.
