American airlines have 4.72 million domestic passenger flights over the whole of 2020. A fall of 41 % compared with 7.94 million flights in 2019. The load factor fell dramatically on domestic flights. It reached 54% in the first 11 months of 2020 compared with 85 % in 2019.
And yet there are a few "good" surprises in this gloomy picture for 2020. Lower airline activity has led to a significant reduction in aircraft delays.
Best punctuality figures since 1995
With flights stabilising and then ramping up from May 2020, American air transport has seen eight consecutive months of record punctuality rates on arrival. This allows airlines to display the highest rates for 25 years. From June to November, the percentage of flights arriving on time even exceeded 90 %. This was particularly the case in September, when a record 92.9% of flights arrived on time.
Over the year as a whole, the Arrival punctuality rate reached 84.5 %. In December, it even reached 87.2%, almost two points above the figure for December 2019.
Among the most successful companies, Southwest is the most punctual, with 95.2% of flights arriving on time (October 2020 figures). Next come Delta Air Lines with 93.4% and Alaska Airlines with 91.9%.. Among the major American airports, Dallas Fort Worth puts in worst performance with a punctuality of 81%, followed by Miami with 88.7%. Boston, Atlanta and New York JFK on the other hand posted the best results, with punctuality rates of 95%, 94.7% and 94.3% respectively.
