The Bloomberg news agency has reported that AirHelp has carried out a detailed analysis of cancellations at US airports. The company, based in Germany, counted 37,000 flight cancellations in 400 US airports between 27 May and 15 July. However, this figure includes the Memorial Day and 4 July weekends, which generate very heavy traffic peaks.
AirHelp reveals that while the average number of flight cancellations per airport was 2.6 %, some airports are well above this average. This is particularly true of New York airports. Two of the city's three airports have the worst cancellation rates. These are LaGuardia, dedicated to domestic traffic, recorded a cancellation rate of 7.7 1TP3Q. Newark, another New York airport, is a close second with a cancellation rate of 7.6%..
The next largest airports are all on the east coast of the country. The airport of Washington National (Ronald Reagan) comes in third place with 5.9% of cancelled flights according to AirHelp statistics. Pittsburgh International Airport is in fourth place with 4.1%, followed by Boston Logan International with 4% of cancellations.
Charlotte Douglas International and Philadelphia each recorded 3.8% of cancelled flights. They are closely followed by Miami International and Cleveland Hopkins International are neck and neck with a rate of 3.7%.
It is interesting to note that New York's third largest airport, John F. Kennedy International, does not feature in the top 10 airports with the highest cancellation rates. JFK only recorded 3.6% of cancelled flights. All in all, not a bad performance for the USA's international gateway!
