What is the role of the City of Johannesburg's Safety Programme?

Nazira Cachalia - The Joburg City Safety Programme (JCSP) was set up in 2004 to implement the city's safety strategy. Our aim is to ensure safety in all areas and sectors of the city.

What is your role as programme director?

N. C. - My role is to ensure that the safety strategy is applied in a comprehensive way and to provide strategic advice that can have an impact on the city in general. For example, on the safety of parks or public places.

To what extent will the strategies deployed for the World Cup lead to greater safety in the future?

N. C. - For the World Cup, our first objective is to ensure the security of the areas where the matches will take place and to identify the most critical points. The importance of reducing crime will undoubtedly enable Johannesburg to deal better with delinquency and violence. The challenge is to build on the efforts made in 2010 and take advantage of the expertise acquired for the occasion. In particular, this will involve the deployment of coordination between security officers at local, provincial and national levels. In addition, a brand new GIS (Geographic Information System) monitoring system has just been developed for the World Cup, and will be one of the many legacies for the city's security.
