L'Mauritius intends to strengthen its attractiveness on the international scene of the MICE. And as a picture-postcard backdrop is not always enough, the local authorities are also playing on the economic string to charm the organisers. A new VAT exemption on accommodation costs has been in place since October.
The Economic Development Board of Mauritius is part of the MICE VAT Exemption Scheme. Designed for business meetings, conferences or even weddings, it is nevertheless subject to certain conditions.
Available to both local and international organisers, this exemption from VAT on accommodation costs involves a minimum of 50 foreign visitors. In addition, visitors must stay for at leastat least three nights in a hotel in Mauritius.
Mauritius boasts the largest and most modern convention centre in the region: the Swami Vivekananda Conference Centre in Pailles. It can host international conferences for up to 5,000 people simultaneously. The range of facilities on offer is rounded off by the International Conference Centre at Grand Bay, with a capacity of up to 600 guests, the Freeport Exhibition in the Red Sea (up to 1,000 delegates) and the Trianon Convention Centre at Trianon (up to 3,000 delegates).
