The people responsible for these developments promise that ". In a remarkable nod to Athenian architecture, the project also includes the creation of two oculi overlooking the new lounge areas on either side of the existing structure, one to the north of the terminal and the other to the south. They will be linked to the rest of the building by passageways, balconies, VIP boxes and active, fluid and rhythmic commercial installations. ". The northern part will house the heart of the new terminalOn the south side, the new structure will feature a Mediterranean landscaped garden set in a stepped circular area. On the south side, the new structure will house a atrium open onto three terraced levels. In both cases, the emphasis will be on natural light. Lastly, the project designed by the Anemos consortium will dedicate the Connected Terminal to non-Schengen flights. It will be linked to the main terminal by a new tunnel.

" Athens is a spectacular city that has seen a huge increase in visitor numbers over the last decade, far beyond what its existing airport can comfortably accommodate. "says Andrew Thomas, Managing Partner at Grimshaw London. " To meet this challenge, we had the pleasure of working with Athens International Airport to create a bold new concept that retains and renovates the existing terminal while adding a series of major new extensions, to create a singular new architectural ensemble. Our design is inspired by the city: an airport that reflects the past, present and future of Athens, a celebration of its architecture, hospitality and culture. "Andrew Thomas promises.
