On 17 June, Lyon became Air Canada's third French destination, after Paris and Nice. The airline now connects Montreal-Trudeau and Lyon Saint-Exupéry airports with five flights a week during the summer season - every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday - and plans to reduce its schedule to 4 weekly frequencies during the winter. The Boeing 767-300 in Canadian livery, with 24 Business Class seats and 187 seats in the main cabin, leaves Lyon at 12 noon for Montreal at 2pm local time. On the return journey, business travellers will leave Trudeau airport at 9.15pm, landing in Lyon at 10.25am.
The launch of this new intercontinental route is part of an overall strategy of international expansion. Last year, Air Canada and its subsidiary Air Canada Rouge launched flights from Toronto to Delhi, Amsterdam to Toronto, Toronto to Dubai, Venice to Montreal, Montreal to Mexico City and Vancouver to Osaka. Other new routes will follow, including Toronto-Seoul, Vancouver-Brisbane, Dublin-Vancouver and Glasgow-Toronto.
