RESTAURANTS
LIL'GEM

Melissa O'Donnell's grandmother was originally from Lebanon. It was this oriental influence that led the former barmaid at the Peninsula Hotel to become the chef and owner of this cosy Lower East Side restaurant, which opened last October. Everything here is delicious: the mezze are all to die for - especially the red pepper purée with walnuts or the fromage frais with herbs, pistachios and olives - the cocktails are to die for - the Lil'Gem with labneh, for example - the breads are soft and the meat cooked to perfection. An address not to be missed.

SEN SAKANA
This brand new restaurant in Midtown is having fun twisting codes by combining Peruvian recipes with Japanese classics. The result is ceviche made with citrus fruits such as yuzu and garnished with coloured corn. But you'll also find more traditional rolls and sushi. At the bar, Pisco Sour experts concoct this Peruvian cocktail.

A large, post-industrial space in the revitalised NoMad district, where Indian cuisine has been dusted off and is predominantly vegetarian or even vegan. On the menu you'll find lovely creations such as avocado-salmon toast with curry leaves and mango chutney, quail curries with massala spices and kebabs with saffron octopus. For dessert, spiced cookies. Unexpected.

MERAKIA

A new and excellent address, again in the NoMad district. This Greek restaurant specialises in lamb. The ribs, grilled to perfection, are the highlight of this fine menu, which also offers a selection of Greek wines. While the atmosphere at lunchtime is very professional, in the evening the place becomes magical with its bar overhung by starry lights.
