Aircraft interiors are already a huge market, worth 17 billion dollars. But this could almost double by 2022, due to the growth in air traffic and fleet renewal. This market is not confined to aircraft manufacturers, seat makers and cabin interior design firms. Light therapy is also making its mark on aircraft, notably on the new Airbus A350 and Boeing 787. Many companies are working to create real lighting atmospheres in the cabins.

For example, Lufthansa has worked with lighting engineers from Kardoff on human biological rhythms. For example, the German airline bathes the cabin of its Airbus A350-900 in a light reminiscent of the atmosphere of a restaurant during meal services and stimulating the appetite. Finnair's cabin, installed on the Airbus A350 serving the Far East, was designed around neutral colours - light grey and white - to reflect a wide range of light.

Finnair uses LED technology to diffuse a prism of 16.8 million different colours. The tones vary from a Nordic light to a warm, more Asian light. Breakfast under the stars the light of the rising sunFinnair adapts its A350s to passengers' well-being, stimulating the sensation of wide open spaces.
